Halloween Celebrations For Me And You

I have always regarded Halloween as one of several special holidays in a year. But Halloween is not similar to Christmas or Valentines day, where we celebrate Christ and saints. This isn't true in Halloween. In here, we celebrate the souls of those who passed earlier than us. Scary, isn't it? Not quite, for Halloween is really a fun celebration.

All Saints day, which falls on November 1, is usually confused with Halloween, which falls on the last day of October. In the 16th century is where the word Halloween was first manifested. "All-Hallows-Eve" is what they call the evening before All Hallows Day. Thus, the word Halloween represents a variant of that fuller Scottish term.

Halloween is celebrated world wide in many ways these days. Even though not all celebrates it, people who do has different views on its traditions and significance. In spite of this, other nations often follow the United States method of celebrating  Halloween, which can sometimes be seen particularly in iconic as well as commercial elements.

Costume parties is the most typical way of celebrating Halloween, especially in America. The individuals will wear costumes representing different characters. The costume they wear varies, but oftentimes are costumes of ghost, witches, or ghouls. However, there are now diverse types of costumes, like costumes of TV series characters, Pirates of the Caribbean Costumes, space-themed costumes, and more. Also prominent in the celebration is Trick-or-Treating, where children wearing costumes go door-to-door in their neighborhood asking for "treats" (usually candies) saying "Trick-or-Treat" to the house owner. Usually the homeowners give the kids candies, but if they do not the children will usually do a mischievous but harmless prank to the homeowner, which is the "trick" in the phrase Trick-or-Treat. Many people love this part of Halloween, as they enjoy seeing kids of all ages wear Pirates of the Caribbean Costumes or something and smile to them once they open their door, but still you'll find individuals who doesn't enjoy this practice and views the children as a nuisance.

As for me, the celebration of Halloween is never noticed here in the Philippines, though lately Halloween is being celebrated in some places. Because we do not know what it is, we didn't experience Trick-or-Treating while I was young. But, in my elementary days, we'd usually plan a costume party for the Halloweens, although sometimes it does not exactly fall on the day of Halloween. We would go to school wearing costumes instead of our uniforms. We would still have classes, but we would only take our exams as well as quizzes and then the teachers will end the classes early, after which we will have our party. Nowadays, I see kids, sometimes wearing costumes, go door-to-door asking for goodies. But because many people cannot (or prefer not to) acquire costumes, you will notice improvised costumes such as a boy zombie wearing a "barong" while having plenty of powder on his face, or a girl princess wearing a gown her parents probably got for a weeding or something. Character costumes like Pirates of the Caribbean Costumes are not too popular here, but at least they have the spirit of Halloween. And it is still plenty of fun to observe!

Halloween, which is admittedly a fun celebration, really has some deep meaning behind it. Halloween teaches us lessons about mortality and death. Once our lives are lost, it's gone eternally. Because of that we should value our lives. And lastly, enjoy your lives to the fullest.

Take pleasure in the holidays and happy Halloween!
